Choosing decorative aggregate for paths and borders
4 min read
What size gravel should I use for a path or driveway?
For paths and driveways, angular gravel around 10-20mm tends to lock together and stay put, while rounded pea gravel scatters and rolls underfoot. Spread it about 40-50mm deep over a firm, membraned base and restrain the edges.
Angular or rounded?
Angular chippings knit together and resist rutting, which is why they suit paths and driveways. Rounded gravels look softer and work well in borders and planted areas, but they migrate under traffic.
Size
Very small sizes track into the house on shoes and tyres. Very large stone is uncomfortable to walk on. Something in the 10-20mm range is a common compromise for routes people actually use.
Depth and base
Around 40-50mm of decorative aggregate over a compacted, membraned base is usually enough. Deeper is not better — it just moves more. Under vehicles, consider a gravel stabilisation grid to stop rutting.
Edges
Without an edge restraint, gravel ends up in the lawn and the borders. Timber, steel, block or a kerb all work; choose to suit the look and the loading.
Colour changes when wet
Most aggregates look markedly different wet and dry, and the colour varies between batches because it is a natural product. Always look at a sample before committing, and order the full quantity together where you can.
