Collecting materials or taking a delivery: what to check

4 min read

What should I check before collecting or taking delivery of building materials?

Check the weight you are legally allowed to carry in your vehicle, the access and turning space at the delivery point, whether there is somewhere firm and clear to offload, and who is offloading. Confirm the specifics with us before you order.

If you are collecting

Know your vehicle's payload — aggregates and paving are heavier than people expect, and a single bulk bag can exceed what a car or small trailer should carry. Bring straps or a cover for loose loads.

If you are taking a delivery

Think about the whole route to the drop point: road width, parking restrictions, overhead cables, low branches, soft verges, gateways and turning space. Larger vehicles need more room than you would guess.

Offloading

Decide in advance where materials will sit, and make sure the ground is firm, level and clear. Kerbside drops need somewhere legal and safe to place goods so they do not obstruct the pavement.

On arrival

Check quantities and condition before signing, and keep paperwork together in case anything needs following up. Store cement and bagged goods dry and off the ground; keep paving stacked safely on edge rather than flat where practical.
