How do I calculate how much concrete I need?
Work out the volume in cubic metres by multiplying length by width by depth in metres, then add around 10% for waste, over-dig and uneven bases. For post holes, calculate each hole's volume and multiply by the number of posts.
Slabs and bases
A shed base 3m x 2m at 100mm thick is 3 x 2 x 0.1 = 0.6 cubic metres. A driveway or anything carrying vehicles usually needs a thicker slab and often reinforcement, so check the design before ordering.
Strip footings
Multiply the trench length by its width by its depth. Trenches rarely come out exactly to size, so allow extra — over-dig in soft ground can add a surprising amount.
Post holes
For a round hole, volume is 3.14 x radius squared x depth, all in metres. Subtract nothing for the post itself on small sections; the allowance is useful spare.
Mixing on site or ready-mixed
Small volumes are usually mixed on site from cement and aggregate. Once you are into larger pours, a single continuous placement gives a better result than many small batches. Either way, work out the volume first — that decides which route makes sense.
Cold and wet weather
Avoid placing concrete on frozen ground or when frost is forecast before it has gained strength, and protect a fresh pour from heavy rain. In hot, dry weather, keep it damp so it cures rather than dries out.
