How to

Mortar mixes for common jobs

4 min read

What mortar mix should I use for laying bricks?

General bricklaying above ground commonly uses a 1:5 or 1:6 cement to building sand mix, often with a plasticiser. Exposed and below-ground work uses a stronger mix, typically 1:4. Always match the mortar to the masonry so the mortar, not the brick, takes any movement.

Common ratios

  • General brickwork and blockwork above ground: around 1 part cement to 5-6 parts building sand.
  • Exposed positions, retaining and below ground: stronger, around 1:4.
  • Soft or handmade bricks: a weaker or lime-based mix is often more appropriate.

Do not over-strengthen

A mortar stronger than the masonry pushes movement into the bricks, which spalls the faces. Stronger is not automatically better.

Consistency and workability

Measure by whole buckets, not shovelfuls, and mix in the same way each time so colour stays consistent across a wall. A plasticiser improves workability; do not use washing-up liquid.

Weather

Do not lay in frost or when frost is forecast, and protect new work overnight. In hot weather, keep mortar and masonry from drying out too fast, and never re-temper mortar that has started to set.

Pointing

Match the profile and colour of existing pointing where you are repairing, and rake out to a sound depth first — a thin skim over old mortar will fail.
